Unfortunately, most people don’t understand how IMPORTANT it is to protect concrete that is exposed to the elements. Unlike stone, concrete is a porous material. Unprotected concrete will readily soak up water, oil, dirt and lots of other contaminates.
Although dirt and oil can permanently stain the concrete, the real threat is WATER! Water soaks into the concrete, then freezes. The freezing water expands, causing tiny cracks to form. These cracks let in even more water, and the cycle continues creating bigger and bigger cracks.
Concrete is primarily made of gravel, sand and cement. Cement is the “glue” that holds the mix together. Although concrete is extremely hard and durable, the cement holding the mix together will actually erode away as water flows across it. This type of damage happens over time and is seldom noticed until it is too late and the damage has already been done.
